Successful imports begin before the goods leave the factory. African businesses should understand the required documents, taxes, transport charges, and delivery responsibilities before placing an order with a supplier in China.
Prepare the core documents
Most shipments require commercial invoices, packing lists, transport documents, and product information. Depending on the destination and goods, customs authorities may also require certificates, permits, or proof of origin.
Calculate the landed cost
Include the product price, packaging, inspection, inland transport in China, freight, insurance, port charges, customs duties, taxes, clearing fees, and final delivery. This gives you a realistic cost per unit for pricing decisions.
Agree responsibilities before payment
Confirm the Incoterm, who books transport, who arranges customs clearance, and where risk transfers from the seller to the buyer. Written responsibilities reduce disputes and make supplier quotations comparable.
Requirements vary by country and product category, so confirm the current rules with a qualified customs professional or local authority before shipping commercial cargo.
